What is Family & Systemic Constellations?

In traditional counselling, we spend a lot of time looking inward. We examine your thoughts, your personal history, and your individual coping mechanisms. But what happens when the weight you are carrying doesn't actually belong to you?

Family & Systemic Constellations, is a systemic approach that looks beyond the isolated individual.

Developed by Bert Hellinger, it operates on the premise that we are inextricably linked to our family systems. Just as we inherit physical traits, we can also inherit emotional patterns, unresolved traumas, and unconscious loyalties from previous generations.

When a family system experiences a profound disruption—such as an early death, exclusion, addiction, or severe trauma—the system becomes entangled.

Often, a younger member of the family will unconsciously "take on" this unresolved burden out of a deep, blind loyalty. In a Constellations session, our goal is to bring these hidden dynamics into the light, allowing you to honour the past while respectfully handing back the burdens that are not yours to carry.

What It Looks Like in Practice

The hallmark of Family Constellations is the creation of a spatial map—a living picture of your family system. By physically placing elements of your family in a shared space, we bypass the analytical mind and tap into what is often called the "field."

1. Group Sessions: The Traditional Format

Group workshops are the most well-known format for this work. In a group setting, you (the client) will briefly state the issue you want to explore. You will then be asked to choose people from the group to serve as "representatives" for specific family members—or even for abstract concepts like your anxiety, a business, or an illness.

You intuitively place these representatives in the room in relation to one another. Once placed, a profound phenomenon occurs: the representatives often begin to experience physical sensations, emotions, or urges that mirror the actual family members they are standing in for, despite knowing nothing about them. As the facilitator, I observe these spatial relationships and guide the representatives through movements and specific "healing sentences" to restore order and balance to the system.

2. One-on-One Individual Sessions

If a group setting feels too exposed, or if we are integrating systemic work into ongoing private therapy, we can do this work one-on-one.

Instead of human representatives, we use symbolic objects to map out your system. This might involve placing wooden figurines on a table, or using floor markers (like pieces of paper or felt mats) to represent family members. Here, you move through the space. You might stand on the different markers to intuitively sense what is happening in that specific position within the family system. It is a quieter, more private process, but it yields the same profound visual and energetic shifts.

3. Couples Sessions: When Two Systems Collide

When a couple sits on the couch, there are never just two people in the room. There are two entire family systems colliding.

In a couples constellation, we aren't just looking at the communication breakdown between the two of you; we are looking at how your inherited family dynamics are interacting. Often, one partner is unconsciously projecting an unresolved dynamic from their family of origin onto their spouse. By mapping this out—either with floor markers or representatives—both partners can physically see the invisible forces driving their conflict. It shifts the dynamic from "you against me" to "us observing the systems that shaped us," which fosters profound empathy and de-escalates blame.

Choosing the Right Format

Format Best Suited For The Experience

Group Setting

Those comfortable with shared spaces who want to experience the power of group work and the feedback of human representatives. Highly visually impactful, insightful and a unique experience of the collective connection to the invisible “field” we all live in.

Individual (1-on-1)

Those who prefer privacy, an intimate experience, and are integrating systemic work into ongoing counselling. Introspective, quiet, and embodied.

Couples

Partners stuck in repetitive conflicts who want to understand the systemic roots of their relationship dynamics. Eye-opening, empathy-building, and shifts focus away from personal blame.

The Enduring Takeaway

Whether you map your system with a room full of people or a handful of wooden figures on a desk, the goal remains the same: clarity. Family & Systemic Constellations doesn't magically erase your past. Instead, it provides a profoundly realistic picture of what is. By seeing the hidden architecture of your life, you are finally free to step into your proper place within your family, leave the past where it belongs, and move forward with your own life.
